Pulp and Paper


Hazardous chemicals are used in pulp and paper mills. These chemicals need to be handled carefully and monitored to minimize potential hazards.

Kraft pulping is a process occurs in batch or continuous cooking systems where heat and white liquor are used to decompose chips of wood to pulp. During the cooking process, it causes lignin that glues the fibers to each other in the wood to breaks down, thereafter, it mixed with the white liquor which causes liberation of Hydrogen Sulfide (H2S) as a result. The white liquor which was contaminated by the lignin is now called the black liquor and is sent to the recovery boiler where molten solids are produced. These molten solids are discharged into a water tank to form the green liquor, upon which, further processes can convert the green liquor back to white liquor for reuse.

The steam under extreme heat during liquor recovery may contain Hydrogen Sulfide (H2S) that required continuous monitoring.

During liquor recovery, pulp is being washed, screened and bleached. Oxygen, Chlorine or Chlorine Dioxide is used to remove undesired colors from the pulp through oxidation or chlorination. Although alternate gases like Hydrogen Peroxide and Ozone are used by most and more factories, steam generated during the process is still fatal.

After the blenching process, the pulp is sent for drying. During dehydration process, natural gas is widely used to create heat by the drying machine. As a combustible gas, continuous monitoring is necessary.

There are possibilities that flammable non-condensable gases will be generated during the pulping process, hence, these gases are prohibited to be released to the atmosphere by regulations. Thus, they are generally eliminated in incinerators or recycled to boilers. Whatever methods are used, accumulation of such gases will lead to great danger. Therefore, combustible gas detectors are considered to monitor and to maintain these gases concentration falls within safety limit.
